S’Arenal was an old fishing village, but today it is an eminent touristic resort with a large demographic expansion, especially from the 1970s onwards. This change has been principally due to tourism (basically English and German). It has a wide beach of white sand, where in the Summer many tourists can be seen taking walks along the length of the promenade which was remodelled at the end of the nineties.
S’Arenal is to be found between two municipalities, Llucmajor y Palma. The boundary is marked by the 'Torrent des Jueus', which normally does not have any water unless it rains, although on a few occasions it has overflown without causing any serious damage. Its church called 'Nuestra señora de la Lactancia' and its patron Saint is Saint Cristobal. 'La Porciúncula' is the other parish church in the zone, but it is in the city of Palma. In this tourist resort two places stand out, S’Arenal Park and Aqualand (formerly Aquacity). S’Arenal Park is a very colourful and lively commercial centre with two floors with shops, cafes, supermarkets and parking, It was designed by Agatha Ruíz de la Prada. Aqualand is a water park with multiple attractions, situated in a wide spacious natural green zone, owing to the fact that the park was constructed in the country area.
